Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family go about their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
