Battlefield 6's Casual Playlist Ignites Intense Discussions Over Bots, Experience Points, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh game mode called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode mirrors the standard Breakthrough format but includes several key changes:
- Every squad includes only eight human participants, with the rest filled by AI-controlled opponents.
- Actions performed by real players grant full XP, while bot actions provide lower rewards.
- Only two locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Dogtags, accolades, and stat tracking are disabled.
So essentially, this mode lives up to its name: it offers a laid-back version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, since it gives additional choices for players seeking alternative ways to have fun with the title. But, if video games has shown one thing, it is that you can't please everyone. In other words, many BF6 players are upset.
Community Reactions: Anger to Support
"People want human opponents. Don't repeat the mistakes of your competitors," reads one reply to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing concept," says another. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player remarks, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and someone else details all the issues they consider to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We don't need this AI-heavy playlist."
However, amid the criticism, some gamers explaining how much they're liking the new mode. "It's very fun to practice, human participants prevent it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," says one Reddit comment. "The community fails to see that there are players who have lives and don't play this title all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," adds a different comment. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is great for me," and someone else applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Constructive Concerns and Player Input
Despite the support, players have valid points to complain about Casual Breakthrough. Some users have highlighted that it could increase wait times even longer for other modes due to the large amount of playlists in the game already. On a similar note, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the existing playlists. It also seems a little backwards that the mode won't start without a required amount of human gamers, despite it focuses mostly on combat against bots.
Lastly, a major complaints is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that got canned when they attempted to eliminate bot farms from the mode. Thus Casual Breakthrough feels like the community compromising in the middle, according to forum feedback. Another describes this mode as the developers "making a mistake significantly, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Occur?
If Battlefield Studios has proven anything to date with Battlefield 6, it is that they're paying attention and acting on player input. Tasks that were overly hard got fixed rapidly, just like the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, if their data shows this recent mode is underperforming to their expectations, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
