Fury Erupts as Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Criticism
Figures from across the political spectrum and the Hollywood world are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Statement
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to describe the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
“What a disgusting and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from His Own Party
A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his political party to justify the comments.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation after the shooting of a different political figure.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
