Citizens have gathered around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the families of people who died in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the agreement.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an evening round of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative stated the morning session finished without tangible results, due to differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are striving to close the differences between the both parties.

Critical Issues in Talks

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance provision
  • After-conflict governance of the territory

Civilian Feeling

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No location seems like home anymore and until each abducted person come back no one will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Near the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Activist a participant remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."

Surveys now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to end in return for the freedom of the abducted.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of Nova festival, mourners assembled to honor the dead.

From that location, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the morning of that day in the western district, sector and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the night arrives, the anxiety comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had accepted the bodies of several people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area reported another two victims had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking help to the southern area, medics said.

The territory's health ministry said twenty-five of the {territ
