During November 2024, England fly-half George Ford appeared disappointed during the match.
The replacement was brought on as a substitute to help the home side close out a famous win against New Zealand, but instead failed to convert a crucial penalty along with a drop-kick as England were beaten by a narrow margin.
Following those costly misses, the player was required to strive to get another shot at delivering glory to the English team.
He played only 25 minutes during this year's Six Nations yet multiple strong showings, notably in the warm-weather tour versus Argentine and American teams when the Smith players were absent for British and Irish Lions duty, reestablished him strongly among starting candidates.
The veteran player not only repaid the coach's trust in starting him facing the Kiwis, and the Sharks star produced a man-of-the-match display to help the home team to a breakthrough triumph versus the Kiwis in their own stadium since 2012.
The decisive instant occurred as Ford nailed consecutive drop-kicks immediately preceding halftime.
This assisted England bounce back from being down 12-0 to reduce the margin to 12-11 when the half ended, prior to the coach's talented substitutes again delivered after halftime to assist the team to a decisive 33-19 triumph.
"Credit must be given to the veteran members within our side, particularly Ford," the manager commented. "During that phase when he converted those drop-goals, he directed play just incredibly.
"Twelve months ago I believed Ford entered and performed very effectively [facing the Kiwis].
"A attempt hit the upright while he attempted a difficult drop-goal, however his play was outstanding.
"He is a phenomenal leader, an outstanding athlete and an even finer individual. We are honored to include him within our roster."

Drop-goals 'part of the strategy'
Back in 2024, the player's errors with the boot proved costly as England lost by the All Blacks - yet Saturday showed a contrasting result in the recent game.
New Zealand commenced strongly at Allianz Stadium, building a twelve-point advantage via touchdowns by two key players.
After Lawrence's powerful finish, the fly-half's successive drop-goals ensured England returned to the locker room with the momentum.
"The tough part at those times occurs as the display indicates 12-0, we must maintain to our guns and what we believe the optimal approach to play the game is," Ford said.
"We fought our way back into contention and we recognized if we started the second half well, with substitutes entering, we found ourselves in an advantageous spot.
"Even with a quarter-hour remaining, we were positioned defending our goal line after a penalty, so we had challenges in that instance too.
"In my opinion that represents Test rugby is - who can deal in those circumstances superiorly."
Both kicks happened within two minutes of each other as the fly-half who executed three drop-goals in a win against Argentina at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, demonstrated his full international experience.
Ford hit two drop-goals for Sale in a league contest conducted in tough circumstances against Bath - this represents an ability he has extensively practiced.
"It [the drop-goals] is always in the plan," Ford continued.
"Borthwick represents an outstanding manager that he is always reminding me, and appropriately since three points is valuable during any phase of the game."
Ford directed his team superbly around the field the entire match, making smart decisions - for both attacking and defensive purposes and in finding space against the defensive line.
His characteristic tactical bomb further confused the opposing fullback, who mishandled the ball.
Following his start in the national team's triumph against Australia in early November, Ford handed over the number 10 jersey to his replacement during the Fiji match seven days later.
However the greatest challenge theoretically this season was presented by the three-time world champions, so Ford returned to his spot.
The English team, presently maintaining 10 straight wins, play against Argentina in late November and curiosity remains to learn if the manager opts to Fin Smith or persists with Ford.
Whatever choice occurs, Ford proved ahead of the next tournament prior to global competition that there is plenty of play remaining in him.
