SNAP Payments Scheduled to Expire for 41 Million Throughout Prolonged Government Closure

Federal agriculture authorities announced on Saturday that nutrition assistance payments from a major federal social assistance programs won't be issued next month amid the persistent federal closure.

Impasse Persists Through Its Third Week

The funding lapse had reached nearly a month at the time of the statement, in response to demands from hundreds of Democratic representatives pushing agriculture officials to access contingency funds to fund November's food assistance.

“The reality is, resources are exhausted,” the USDA stated. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” on 1 November.

Millions Affected

Tens of millions of people count on these food benefits, according to federal data. Various areas, such as one southwestern state, dependence on the program is as high as a significant portion of citizens.

Internal communications seen by a major news agency revealed that the department chose not to tap emergency reserves for November food benefits.

Political Stalemate

Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked about the way to finance and restart the federal government.

Remarks from the director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities indicated that the White House had opportunities to prepare in advance to ensure continuous assistance.

“They had the ability and responsibility acted before now to get ready to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them for potential political benefit” as Republicans seek to influence Democratic senators to support a spending bill that would reopen federal functions.

Local Responses

Executives in Louisiana and Virginia declared states of emergency recently to free up resources to combat potential hunger in anticipation of SNAP benefits not being issued in November.
