The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Application of Machine Learning for Next Project

The team behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its upcoming project, sparking immense excitement within the industry. However, recent statements from the company's figurehead have introduced clarity to the conversation, focusing on the team's approach toward machine learning.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new statement, the studio's founder outlined that the company is using AI technology for particular ancillary functions. These include developing pitch decks, generating rough concept art, and creating temporary dialogue.

Importantly, Vincke stressed that the final content in the game will be created entirely by real writers. "Our team is writing every line manually," he said.

Our studio is actively increasing our roster of storytellers and are currently forming dedicated writer rooms.

Given that visual development is being specifically referenced — we currently have twenty-three artistic staff and have roles to fill for further artists.

All our efforts we do is supplementary and aimed at letting our team spend additional energy on actual creation.

Every AI system implemented properly is a boost to a creative team process, not a replacement for their talent.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The news of AI usage at first generated concern among a segment of the fanbase. In reaction, Vincke issued further detail on online platforms.

"Our team utilizes AI tools to gather inspiration, just like we use Google and art books," he wrote. "During the very early brainstorming phase we use it as a rough outline for layout which we then substitute with hand-crafted illustrations."

He noted, "Our studio recruits talent for their unique talent, not for their willingness to replicate what a algorithm proposes."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had in the past broken down the studio's focused method to machine learning, defining its use into key functions:

  • Streamlining Repetitive Work: This encompasses motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to speedily create basic models of mechanics to validate concepts prior to complete implementation.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Researching how AI could in the future enhance innovative player agency, especially in managing player-driven narratives in a vast role-playing world.

He specifically noted that central narrative areas — like music composition — are are absolutely not departments where the studio is reducing artistic involvement. On the contrary, Larian is actively hiring in these very fields.

"Larian is neither launching a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not looking at cutting teams to replace them with AI," Vincke summarized.
