The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
