Vehicle Fleeing Police Smashes into Tampa Bar, Leaving Four Deceased and 11 Injured
An speeding car while fleeing police crashed into a busy bar in the early hours on the weekend, claiming the lives of four people and injuring eleven in a vintage district of Florida, known for its nightlife and tourists.
An air patrol unit with the local law enforcement agency spotted the vehicle operating dangerously on a freeway at approximately just after midnight after authorities said the light-colored car had been observed illegally racing in a different neighborhood, according to a police department announcement.
The state road police caught up with the car and tried to execute a maneuver that involves bumping a rear fender of a fleeing car to cause it to lose control, called a pit, but it was unsuccessful.
Highway patrol officers “disengaged” as the vehicle raced toward the historic downtown area near downtown, Tampa authorities said. Ultimately, the driver failed to maintain control of the vehicle and hit more than a dozen individuals near the bar, police confirmed.
Three individuals died at the scene and a fourth victim succumbed at a hospital. As of Saturday morning, a fifth casualty was hospitalized in critical condition, and eight other patients were being treated at local medical centers but were listed as stable, authorities said. Two other individuals sustained minor harm and declined medical aid at the site. All 15 people are adults.
“The incident today was a senseless tragedy, we are with the families of the deceased and all those who were impacted,” the local police chief expressed in a message.
Officers named the alleged driver as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, who was booked on Saturday and is being held at the local jail.
Legal documents showed the suspect has been charged with 4 counts of vehicular homicide and 4 charges of aggravated evading arrest with serious bodily injury or fatality. Each are first-degree crimes. Legal representation was listed for Sampson.
“Our entire city is mourning the tragedy,” said Tampa’s mayor, who also was the city’s first female top cop, in a post on social media.
“My thoughts are with the victims and families. The investigation into this crash is ongoing, and efforts are underway to get answers,” the statement added.
Lately, some states and local agencies have pushed to restrict the use of high-speed car chases to protect both the public and officers. After a rise in deaths, a recent report funded by the US justice department called for law enforcement pursuits to be rarely used, noting that the danger to suspects, personnel and bystanders often exceeds the urgent requirement to take someone into custody.
Still, Florida has doubled down on the tactics, with the region’s road police revising its guidelines to relax restrictions on the use of car chases and precision techniques. The federally supported analysis described these tactics as “high-risk” and “debated”.
